10 Study Tips for the End of Semester Exams

As students work their way through the school year it’s no surprise that the enthusiasm for learning may begin to dim. As the excitement of the holidays approach the students have one more hurdle to jump, end of semester exams.  This time of the year provides different pressures for all students Years 7-12.

We live in a stressful world, and the stress is heightened for students when it’s time to prepare for end of semester exams. When stresses are high, our brains do not work to the best of its ability, resulting in the students finding it harder to access information previously studied or learned.  Below are 10 ways to help your sons be successful learners.

  1. Get Organized. Making a plan for what you’re going to do and when you’re going to do it
  2. Don’t multitask. Focus on one subject at a time. Plan different sessions for different subjects
  3. Divide it up. Study in chunks.  Don’t force yourself through long sessions where you are getting tired.
  4. Sleep. Getting a good night’s rest will sharpen your focus and improve your working memory.
  5. Set a schedule. Do you work better right after school or after you’ve eaten dinner? Find a schedule that works for you, and stick to it.
  6. Take notes. Taking notes will not only keep you more engaged during class. It’s much easier to reread your notes than to reread your entire textbook!
  7. Study. Don’t cram.
  8. Manage your study space. Find a place that will maximize your productivity. Look for places away from the television and other distractions.
  9. Find a study group. Sitting down with a group of people who are learning the same things as you is a great way to go over confusing class material or prepare for a big test.
  10. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to do ask for help – from a teacher, a tutor or your friends
