As we approach Ash Wednesday on 5 March 2025, we enter the solemn season of Lent—a time for reflection, repentance, and renewal in preparation for Easter. This year, Caritas Australia is launching its annual Project Compassion campaign, inviting communities nationwide to unite against poverty and injustice.
Understanding Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian liturgical calendar. It is a day when many Christians receive ashes on their foreheads, symbolising penance and mortality. The tradition of using ashes has biblical roots, representing humility and the human need for reconciliation with God. This practice serves as a public expression of faith and a commitment to spiritual growth during the 40 days leading up to Easter.
Project Compassion 2025: “Unite Against Poverty”
In alignment with the Lenten call to almsgiving, Caritas Australia launches Project Compassion 2025 with the theme “Unite Against Poverty.” This annual fundraiser supports vulnerable communities globally, empowering them to overcome poverty through sustainable development programs. Each year, approximately 1,700 schools and 1,200 parishes across Australia participate, making a tangible impact on the lives of those in need.
How We Are Raising Funds
Our school community is coming together to support Project Compassion through several initiatives:
· Pizza Fundraiser and Meal Deals: Special meal deals will be available in both the Junior School and High School carnival days, with proceeds going directly to Project Compassion.
· Mufti Day for Harmony Day (21 March): Students will have the opportunity to wear casual clothes and donate to support this important cause.
How to Get Involved
· Participate in Fundraising Events: Purchase meal deals and take part in Mufti Day.
· Spread Awareness: Encourage friends and family to support Project Compassion.
