Captains Corner – Bogged down

Once again, this last week has been eventful to say the least. We are currently in the middle of our assessment period and are getting ready for the swimming and athletics carnival. You may have even heard the school flooded but in true testament to the Eddies ethos we continued to participate in our education just with a little bit of flexibility. This rain has been absolutely welcome by all especially out boys from rural NSW. It is nice to see our ovals green just in time for the beginning of our winter sports training.

As the deadlines for assignments edge closer tutoring has begun. Tutoring is held in the library after school on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 until 5:00. The tutoring is facilitated by senior students and teachers from all faculties. I am one of the students who both attends and assist students at tutoring. It is an overlooked resource which I would describe as invaluable. It is a great opportunity to receive the opinions from students who have already done similar assignments and topics as well as feedback from teachers marking the assignment.

With the upcoming start of winter sport training has started. Sport is a great opportunity for boys to form the brotherhood which St Edmunds values so dearly. I remember when I began Eddies in Year 7 I started playing rugby union and the friendships I made in that team are the ones I still hold today. The bond which is created both on the field and off is unmatched. Since training begins early in the year it is a great opportunity for Year 7 boys to meet other boys who share similar interests.

Finally, this week we began our preparation for the swimming carnival. Each house group had to choose a theme for their house to dress up as. Some examples include Rice Heist and Clancy C.I.A. the swimming carnival is an important time in the year and is integral to the house championship. I recall my first swimming carnival as being a real eye opener to what high school is. There were so many different things you could do at the carnival like play volleyball or jump off the diving boards, something which was unbeknownst to me in primary school. The carnival is held at civic pool and it is great to see when boys get around the house themes.

This week and the one coming up is a great opportunity for boys to form the brotherhood which is valued at Eddies as well as begin to immerse themselves in the St Edmunds community and events.
