Captain’s Corner – Dressed for Success

This past week of school has seen and an incredible balance of academic effort and school spirit. Kicking the week off senior tertiary students completed AST trials, preparing themselves for the impactful testing they will complete nearing the end of Year 12. The effort and dedication shown by students in this extensive trial was a perfect representation of the hard work and dedication the boys put into their schoolwork.

We are also beginning to reach that part of the term where the first round of assessments are due. Whether it be in science, maths or health, we are all beginning to get a taste for the crunch time that will become familiar at end of semester. As the workload has increased, it’s been wonderful to hear the students utilising the afternoon tutoring in the library to assist their efforts.

The peak of last week was definitely the swimming carnival. Look no further to find the perfect example of brotherhood and school spirit. With each house demonstrating a theme such as O’Brien Olympians or Haydon Heroes, countless numbers of boys participated in the day, dressed in costume and house colours. Arriving to school in a toga and being greeted by The Flash is already a very fond memory of that day. The carnival was well run by Mr Richardson with boys earning as many house points as possible. The Age Championship races in the morning saw many boys demonstrating their ability by competing for gold, and the day that followed saw all the boys competing in water polo, volleyball, Hungry Hippos and swimming, earning house points to take their house to the top. Ultimately, to the shock of the school, and Mr Richardson, Mulrooney won the day, breaking their dry spell.

For an already great day, the icing on the cake was the opening of the diving boards. At one point it seemed like the entire school was lining the edge of the pool, with many eager boys spread throughout the years climbing the stairs to the boards. In costume or not, flip or pin drop, hearing the entire school cheer and clap for the single student jumping was incredible.

If the swimming carnival is any indication of the spirit we will see throughout the year, then I am excited to see what will come, and am excited to see what house themes await for the upcoming athletics carnival.
