Captain’s Corner – Mulrooney House

To all the students, teachers, and wider St Edmund’s Community.

St Edmund’s College is heading into the busiest time of year with academics and sports. To start week 7 off, on Monday the 22nd our top basketball representatives played in the ASC basketball tournament. Furthermore, on Friday the 26th, the year 11 students experienced retreat accompanied with by the College Captain candidate speeches for 2023 leadership opportunities. Additionally, heading into one of the most stressful times of the year, year 12 tertiary students underwent AST practice in preparation for a tense two days of AST scaling tests held on the 6th and 7th of September.

After an amazing rugby season, the 1st XV squad finish up the regular season undefeated! This Saturday they enter the semi-final game against Daramalan College. Our best wishes go to them and all the other age groups entering the semi-finals. Another amazing announcement for sport is St Edmund’s new partnership with the Canberra Raiders through the boys Sport Science program. This partnership will provide a clear connection between the Raiders and Eddies students playing rugby league, still upholding and inspiring high-level achievements academically and physically.

In September, we have two very important events that have been encouraged and promoted weekly by the St Edmund’s student leadership team. The St Edmund’s Sleep out for ‘House and home’ held on the 16th of September and the St Edmund’s College ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ musical held on the 9th, 10th, and 15th-17th of September.

The sleep out for ‘House and Home’ is an annual event which is arranged for a moment of pause and reflection to consider those who slept through rough conditions in Canberra’s winter. This event provides support to long lasting connections that St Edmund’s have held for many years with Karinya house and Home in Queanbeyan. The boys who wish to take part in the sleepout are encouraged to seek sponsorship. This money goes towards supporting the important work of ‘House and home.’ The students will sleep in the gymnasium to be given an opportunity to become knowledgeable around the matters and issues that homeless people face every day.

The ’Little Shop of Horrors’ musical has been a hard-working progress which has taken much time, work, and effort from the St Edmunds College, Merici College, and Canberra Girls Grammar students. This show is a proud event that St Edmunds are eager to perform with a large audience.

Edmunds to the Fore,
