Captain’s Corner – Performing with Passion

Last week, the school held the House of Eddies cabaret, a mix of musical and drama performances, with the emphasis on the show based around House and Home.

The six College Houses had carefully hand-picked students make up a band and perform a song based on the House theme. As well as musical numbers the Year 9/10 Drama students performed work that they had written and directed  themselves. There were also several media presentations including an investigation into the Housepoint system and a certain “cheating” house, which showcased an entertaining mockumentary created by Joshua Nicholls, a Year 12 student currently studying media. We also had the privilege to have the Red Hill Primary School’s Wassa Wassa African drumming band perform as the first act of the night.

The cabaret was a huge success, and I am incredibly thankful to the wonderful PAC staff that gave me the opportunity to be one of the four hosts of the show. I would also like to thank everyone who participated in the bands, drama performances and other acts on the night. The courage it takes to get up on stage and perform is no small feat and the sense of mateship that flowed through each rehearsal and the final performances was simply astonishing.

This week the Year 11/12 drama class is participating in ‘Act Up,’ a performing arts festival held at the Canberra Theatre where schools in Canberra come together to put on a variety of short performances. This is an amazing opportunity to represent the school’s Creative and Performing Arts department in a public setting, and I hope that it goes off without a hitch.

Last week the College band had the opportunity to play at the St Clare’s ‘On-Stage’ event. It was once again fantastic to see the collaboration between the students and an honour to be invited to perform at Clare’s. We also had Year 10 student Connor Moloney play a song that he created that used an electric guitar and a looper at the whole school assembly.

To finish off I wish everyone good luck on their exams, and as they always say, break a leg!
