St Edmund’s College Basketball Program: A Tradition of Excellence and Character
Basketball at St Edmund’s College began in the early 1980s as a summer sport, and in 1998, it evolved into an all-year-round commitment, with teams competing in both Winter and Summer seasons. Our basketball program is deeply rooted in the Edmund Rice tradition, emphasising the values of respect, inclusivity, and community, which are central to the holistic development of our students.
Seasonal Structure and Competition
- The Summer Season commences in Term 4 and concludes in Term 1, while the Winter Season begins in Term 2 and finishes in Term 3. All teams participate in the local ACT Basketball competitions, playing at the Tuggeranong and Belconnen Basketball Stadiums.
- At St Edmund’s, we strive to create a basketball program that is both effective and supportive. Our goal is to provide students with the opportunity to participate in every aspect of basketball, nurturing their skills, passion, and love for the game within a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment. We offer teams across all ages and divisions (Division 1-6), catering to players of all abilities.
Character Building and Holistic Development
- Guided by the Edmund Rice ethos, our basketball program not only focuses on physical development but also on the growth of character and spirit. Through participation in basketball, students learn essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, leadership, and resilience—qualities that align with the Edmund Rice values of compassion, justice, and service to others.
Opportunities for Elite Exposure and Cultural Immersion
- St Edmund’s College Basketball is committed to providing our athletes with exposure to travel, immersion, and elite-level competition. A highlight of our program is the USA Basketball Tour, available to students from Year 10 who play basketball for the College. This tour offers a unique opportunity for students to experience basketball in its birthplace, both on and off the court, immersing themselves in the culture, history, and spirit of the sport. This experience reflects the College’s dedication to broadening our students’ horizons and fostering a global perspective, consistent with the Edmund Rice tradition of education beyond the classroom.
