Competition Day Arrives for our Mathematicians

On Friday 5 August, over 60 of our keenest Mathematics students took part in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). Since its inception in 1976 in the Australian Capital Territory, the participation numbers have increased to around 600,000, with around 100,000 being from outside Australia, making it the world’s largest mathematics competition.

The AMC is an engaging 30-problem competition that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students’ everyday lives. Australia’s leading educators and academics, with a deep understanding of our national curriculum standards, actively design the unique AMC problems each year.

For our primary-aged students, the competition was 60 minutes in length and calculators were allowed. The senior school students, however, spent 75 minutes in the chilly hall and were not allowed calculators. They were so busy I don’t think they even noticed the cold.

Results are available early term 4, and I look forward to sharing these with you.

Left to right students are Roux Basson, Brayden Fowler, Sonny Lauvao and Myles Bullplitt-Troy of Year 8

In other Mathematics Department news, we were sad to farewell Mr Ben Manley at the end of first semester. Mr Manley was a passionate and engaging teacher whose ability to think outside the square and draw upon knowledge from his wide and eclectic areas of interest made his classes fun and interesting. We wish him all the best with his family move to Queeensland.

This semester we have welcomed Mr Aaron James, already a valued colleague and teacher with his eye for detail in preparation and deep knowledge base. He is a whiz with technology and has had previous experience with the MathsOnline program we are trialling until the end of the year.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your student’s Mathematics journey.
