Junior School News: Term 3, Week 4, 2024

This week’s edition of Junior School News is written with an enormous sense of pride. In what has been a wonderful fortnight for the College community, bonds have been strengthened with a hugely successful Blue & White Ball, followed by a Heritage round to be remembered. Both occasions were fitting events for the school’s 70th anniversary year. Congratulations and thank you to the many, many staff, parents/carers and old boys involved in these events. We look forward to another Twighlight event in Term 4 to cap off our series of celebrations this year. As I write this edition of the Junior School news, I am currently on Year 5 camp. Year 5 students and staff have had the pleasure of attending Borambola Sport and Recreation centre this week, near Wagga Wagga. Staff and students have been blown away by the facilities, the varied activities and the gourmet food. We would like to thank the Borambola staff for their energy, commitment and patience. Thank you to Mr Bell, Miss Cusack and Mrs Ellem for taking time away from their families/everyday lives to be with our Year 5 students for this wonderful outdoor education experience.

Last Thursday, approximately 55 Junior School students participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition. Congratulations to these students on their efforts. Results and certificates will be provided to students as soon as we have them.

Last Friday we enjoyed a Book Week performance from Nikki and Oliver, two professional performers from Wollongong. Several students gave them a score of 11 out of 10, which was a great lead in to Book week next week. We also had approximately 30 students head to ADFA for a musical performance. Thank you to Mrs Hojem, Mrs Marris and Mrs Rasmussen for the organisation of these events.

Thursday 15 August – Junior School Assembly at 11.30am in the R.J. Wallace Hall. During this assembly we will recognise students doing well in class and enjoy some performances.

Friday 16 August – House Day celebration. Please note that this Friday students will enjoy a House celebration in the afternoon. All Junior School students will receive a BBQ lunch and have some inter-house activities in the afternoon. Normal school uniform. Please email your son’s classroom teacher with any dietary requirements.

Tuesday 20 August – Friday 23 August. Book Week– This year’s theme is magic. Thank you to all students, Ms Cusack and Mrs Hojem for the wonderful ‘steampunk’ display in our Junior School library. The Book Fair has been postponed and more information will come out about this closer to the time. Our Book Week parade will be held period 1 on Wednesday 21 August at 9am in the RJ Wallace Hall. Students may dress as their favourite book character for the day. On this day we will also enjoy a visit from author David Connelly after lunch. Students may purchase signed copies of his books on this day.

Thursday 22 August – Moderation Day. Pupil Free Day at St Edmund’s College.

Thursday 22 August – South Weston Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to the 34 students who have been selected to represent the College at the South Weston regional carnival. If students finish in the top 4 in their event, they will qualify for the ACT carnival. All information will be sent to families this week. Unfortunately for the students, this carnival falls on Moderation Day.

Friday 30 August – Father’s Day Mass and Morning Tea. All Fathers, grandfathers and father-figures in our community are invited to this event. The Mass will be at 9.30am in the RJ Wallace Hall, followed by morning tea at 10.30am. You must RSVP to this event to attend. Please see social media posts or contact reception to RSVP.

Year 6 into Year 7 – Please note that students currently enrolled in Year 6 do not need to re-enrol into Year 7. Year 6 student enrolment automatically continues into Year 7.

Year 4-6 After School Homework Club – Please note there will be no homework club next week

Year 6 Runners Program – As a part of our Year 6 into High School transition program, we will be enlisting the assistance of Year 6 students to help as runners. As runners, the students will get to know the school layout very well ahead of Year 7. The students will work in pairs for a full day (learning remotely between jobs).

Hair Policy – Thank you to all parents/carers for keeping your son/s haircuts in line with the school’s uniform and hair policy. At times barbers may make mistakes. If they are informed of their mistake, many will fix the haircut (in line with our policy) at no extra charge. Could I please ask that all parents/carers familiarise themselves with the hair policy so that students can get about their daily work without teacher’s asking them about their haircuts. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Hair should be kept neat, tidy and clean at all times and not grown or styled into an extreme or exaggerated fashion.

Hair should be of uniform length and no shorter than a number ‘two’.

Students are not allowed to have lines or designs shaved into their hair nor grow long sections of hair that can be fashioned into ‘top buns’, plaits, undercuts, braids, ‘rats tails’, ‘mohawks’ or ‘mullets’ etc.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up – Please do not use the staff carpark (off Canberra Avenue) to drop or collect students before and after school. This is a dangerous place for our students to be moving through and we would like to keep this area for staff only. Thank you for helping to keep our community safe.
