Junior School News: Week 1, Term 2, 2021

I wish to extend a very warm welcome back to all of our Junior School families. I trust the break was a good chance to spend some time with your son/s and perhaps even a chance to relax with them ahead of another school term. It was great to see many families at the Vikings Rugby Gala Day on Saturday and also at our Parent/Teacher interviews yesterday afternoon. Reflecting on the next few weeks here at St Edmund’s makes me feel excited, as we have many events and opportunities ahead. I have listed some of these events below. Not all of these events will impact on you or your son but being aware of them will give you an idea of what lies ahead for students, staff and our community as a whole. On Tuesday next week we will welcome over 100 boys to St Edmund’s for Experience Eddies Day. Our visitors, from a range of primary schools in Canberra and surrounding New South Wales, will enjoy some specialist classes and have an opportunity to experience what is like to be an Eddies boy. This day should flow nicely into Open Day which is on Saturday week, 1 May.

Winter Sport Begins – this weekend for Football (soccer) and next weekend (beginning 1 May) for Rugby and Basketball. Good luck to all of our Junior School teams as they begin their seasons. Have fun!

ANZAC DAY Queanbeyan March – Sunday 25 April. Thank you to Andre and Douglas L’Aimable, Thomas and William Walsh, Archie Manwaring and Lucas Regan for representing the school and assisting the Queanbeyan sub-branch with the march on this special day. We will also have four Year 12 helpers and Eden Mordike (Year 12) will give an address on the day.

ANZAC DAY Public Holiday (ACT) – Monday 26 April. Please note the school is not open on this day.

Experience Eddies Day – Tuesday 27 April. On this day prospective students will come to St Edmund’s to experience a day as an Eddies boy. If you know of any interested families, please direct them to our College website.

12/U ACT Swimming Championships – Wednesday 28 April. Good luck to Darcy Borghouts, Phillip MacNamara, Koby Carmody, Charles Burke and Darcy Davis.

College Open Day – Saturday 1 May at 11am-2pm. We will be asking for student volunteers to assist on this day, around co-curricular commitments. If your son shows an interest in this, he will bring home a note with information regarding this service opportunity.

Founder’s Day Mass and Activities – Wednesday 5 May. Students are to wear their formal Winter uniform to school for Mass in the morning and will be able to change into anything Blue and White or Eddies themed after recess. Students will not be required to change back into the formal uniform.

Matt Giteau Cup (Rugby Union) – Friday 7 May. Mr Fox will be conducting trials in order to enter teams into this event. He will communicate trial information with the students at some point this week.

Year 5 NAPLAN Testing 2021 – Week 4. Mr Dale Argall has placed information regarding these tests in previous editions of the Vortex in Term 1. If you have any questions regarding your son’s participation in this testing, special provisions, or exemptions, please contact Dale: dargall@stedmunds.act.edu.au or your son’s teacher.
