Junior School News: Week 1 Term 2, 2022

I wish to extend a very warm welcome back to all of our Junior School families. I trust the break was a good chance to spend some time with your son/s and perhaps even a chance to relax with them ahead of another school term. It was great to see many families at the Anzac Day March and Ceremony in Queanbeyan on Monday and it will be great to meet with parents/carers face-to-face at Parent/Teacher interviews this week. Earlier this week I mentioned to the Junior School students about the many events and opportunities we have at school over the next few weeks. I have listed some of these events below. Not all of these events will impact on you or your son but being aware of them will give you an idea of what lies ahead for students, staff and our community as a whole. On Monday of Week 3 we will welcome many boys to St Edmund’s for Experience Eddies Day. Our visitors, from a range of primary schools in Canberra and surrounding New South Wales, will enjoy some specialist classes and have an opportunity to experience what is like to be an Eddies boy. This day should flow nicely on from Open Day (May 7) and the College Information Evening which is on Tuesday 3 May.

ANZAC DAY Assembly – Wednesday 27 April, Period 2.

Parent/Teacher Interviews for Junior School – Wednesday 27 April (after school, bookings required).

Sacramental Program Information Session – Tuesday 3 May (5pm-6pm). This session is for any families interested in the sacramental program conducted at the college.

College Information Night – Tuesday 3 May (6pm-7pm). This evening is for prospective families looking to hear more about St Edmund’s College. If you know of any interested families, please direct them to our College website.

12/U ACT Swimming Championships – Wednesday 4 May. Information has been sent home with students involved.

Founder’s Day Mass and Activities – Thursday 5 May. Students are to wear their formal Winter uniform to school for Mass in the morning. Mass will be held at the Cathedral in Manuka (students will walk to and from the venue). Celebration activities will be held after our return to school. Students may change into blue and white clothes for the remainder of the day. There will be no need to change back into formal uniform at the end of the day.

Mother’s Day Mass and Morning Tea – Friday 6 May (9.30am – 11.15am). Please note information regarding this wonderful community event has been placed in a previous Vortex article and details are also on the school’s Facebook page.

College Open Day – Saturday 7 May (10am – 1pm). We will be asking for student volunteers to assist on this day, around co-curricular commitments. If your son shows an interest in this, he will bring home a note with information regarding this service opportunity.

Experience Eddies Day – Monday 9 May. On this day prospective students will come to St Edmund’s to experience a day as an Eddies boy. If you know of any interested families, please direct them to our College website.

Matt Giteau Cup (Rugby Union) – Friday 6 May. Mr Fox will be conducting trials in order to enter teams into this event. He will communicate trial information with the students at some point this week.

Year 5 NAPLAN Testing 2021 – Week 3/4. Mr Zach Holmes has placed information regarding these tests in previous editions of the Vortex in Term 1. If you have any questions regarding your son’s participation in this testing, special provisions, or exemptions, please contact Zach: zholmes@stedmunds.act.edu.au or your son’s teacher.

The order of the tests will be: Writing, Reading, Language Conventions, Numeracy and they will be held at some point over the two week window.
