Junior School News: Week 10, Term 3, 2020

As we near the end of Term 3 we can reflect on all the achievements, activities, learning experiences and enjoyment from our first three terms of school for 2020. I must say a huge congratulations to the Junior School students who have accepted the challenges presented during a difficult year to make this school such a great place to be. Being able to showcase the spirit and character of our students to a limited number of parents and guests at our assembly last week was wonderful. Well done to all students who received awards or assisted with presentations on the day. The assembly followed the theme of ‘homelessness’, which tied in with our mufti day where students raised over $2000 for The Home in Queanbeyan and Karinya House. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

College Stayover – After school on Friday, over a dozen Junior School students took part in a 4-12 Stayover, which was a major formation event organised with help of Ms Cusack. Congratulations to all involved for their terrific work, particularly in creating a picture with messages which will be on display at Karinya House.

Staffing – On Friday, students and staff organised a surprise party to farewell Mr Roberts, who will be taking on a role in the High School for Term 4. We congratulate him on the terrific work he has done in Junior School and he will be missed. The event consisted of a pizza lunch and staff v student touch football match. Despite some dubious refereeing by Mr Bell, the staff team, led by captain Mr Roberts, secured the narrowest of victories. Next term, we welcome Mrs Holly Ellem back to the Junior School, who will ensure a strong finish to the year for 6 Gold.

Term 3 Progress Reports – our Term 3 reports will be available online this week. Please use these reports to discuss learning goals with your son and to help guide discussions with him about his academic progress. Hopefully many of you will take the final formal opportunity for 2020 to meet with your son’s teacher at next term’s (first Tuesday back) parent/teacher interviews.

Book Week – Please note that Book Week will occur at St Edmund’s during Week 2, Term 4. Our parade will occur on the morning of Thursday 22 October. Unfortunately due to the School Musical, we will not have access to the Hall. This will mean we won’t have a space large enough to invite parents and guests. So sadly, it will be a student only event this year. Students who have impressed with their costumes will go into raffles for various prizes. We will also present awards for the Principal’s Reading Challenge, which ends on Friday 16 October.

Theme: Curious Creatures, Wild Minds

Dates: Term 4: October 17-23 with our parade day on Thursday 22 October

Year 4 Camp and Father/Son Camp update – Unfortunately we have had to cancel these events, which were due to occur next term. Year 4 teachers will run a revised program within the school and surrounds. Any families who were selected to attend this year’s father/son camp will have first priority next year.
