Junior School News: Week 2, Term 1, 2020

I wish to extend a huge welcome to new and returning families. We begin 2020 after a challenging holiday break but there has been a wonderful atmosphere in the Junior School as we launch into the new school year. On Monday last week we had the pleasure of meeting our newest Eddies boys and their families. New students spent some time with their teachers and parents and carers were able to hear from key staff members.

Last week, Year 6 students were given the opportunity to apply for Junior School leadership positions. Well done to all of the students who took on the challenge of writing an application and delivering a speech to their peers and teachers. In my book you are all winners. Congratulations to the following students who were successful in gaining a leadership position:

Junior School Leaders: Mitchell Mynott Smith and Sonny Lauvao

Junior School Academic Leader: Ian Scott

Junior School Service Leader: James Martens

We look forward to their contribution and leadership. These students will be presented with their badges at the opening school Mass on Thursday 27 February.

Junior School House Captains will be chosen in the next couple of weeks and badges will be presented at the swimming carnival on Friday 6 March.

Term 1 is always full of College events and generally moves very quickly. I have included below some important events that will impact on Junior School students or their families over the next few weeks.

Thursday 13 February – School Photos Catch-up Day

Monday 24 February – Wednesday 26 February – Year 6 Camp. Notes will come home regarding this opportunity.

Thursday 27 February 9.45am – 11.00am – Opening School Mass at St Christopher’s Cathedral, Manuka. The school will celebrate the beginning of the school year with an opening school Mass. This will be a whole College event and the boys will walk to and from the venue. If your son has mobility issues, please let his class teacher know so that we can organise transport for him on one of the school buses.

Tuesday 3 March – Moderation Day (Pupil Free Day for Years 4-12)

Friday 6 March – Junior School Swimming Carnival @ Queanbeyan. Information notes will be coming out this week and must be returned by the due date on the note. Please be mindful this is a swimming carnival so accurate indications of swimming ability are vital.

Year 4-6 after school homework assistance

Tuesday & Wednesday after school

3.30pm – 4.30pm

Junior School Library lab

Boys are to bring work with them what they may need assistance with. This could be homework, assignments, extension work or additional work set by their classroom teacher.

Email dkelly@stedmunds.act.edu.au should you wish your son to attend.

Canteen

The School Canteen is looking for volunteers to help.  If you are able to spare 1 hour per month (10.30am to 11.30am) we would love to see you.

Please ring Pam on 62390649 if you can help.
