Junior School News: Week 2, Term 1, 2021

Last week was a terrific week in Junior School. New students got to know their teachers and have been meeting new friends daily.

On Friday, our House Leaders led House assemblies and students learnt about their House totems, history and emblem. They also spent time thinking of a House song for the year.

Term 1 is always full of College events and generally moves very quickly. I have included below some important events that will impact on Junior School students or their families over the next few weeks.

Co-Curricular Activities – Thank you to all families who assisted in filling out co-curricular forms last week. This data has been entered on the school end and you should here from your son’s activity coordinators this week. Generally speaking, Junior School activities such as debating, chess, etc. begin in Week 3 (Steam not until Week 5) and Winter Sports around Week 6. If you decide you would like your son to join another activity, please do not hesitate to contact the activity coordinator. Your son’s classroom teacher can assist you with this as can Angus Balmaks (abalmaks@stedmunds.act.edu.au)

Tuesday – Cultural Club, Debating, Homework Club
Wednesday – Sports trainings (although these can sometimes occur on other afternoons), Homework Club
Thursday – Steam Club
Friday – Chess Club

Year 6 Runners Program – As a part of our Year 6 into High School transition program, we will be enlisting the assistance of Year 6 students to help as runners. As runners, the students will get to know the school layout very well ahead of Year 7. The students will work in pairs for a full day (learning remotely between jobs). The students will rotate through on a daily basis for semester 1 only. This program begins Term 1, Week 2, beginning with 6 Blue.

Wednesday 10 February – New Families Welcome Evening (6.00pm-7.30pm in the Hall).

Thursday 11 February – School Photos Catch-up Day

Friday 12 February – Mulrooney House Day. Please note on this day students in Mulrooney House may wear neat, casual (mufti) clothes. Lunch will be provided. Shoes must be enclosed, no singlets.

Monday 15 February – Parent/Teacher Evening

Thursday 23 February 9.30am – 10.30am – Opening School Mass at school. The school will celebrate the beginning of the school year with an opening school Mass. This will be a whole College event. Unfortunately, due to Covid-safe requirements, we only have a few invited parents/carers of students receiving leadership badges.

Wednesday 24 February – Friday 26 February – Year 6 Camp.

Tuesday 2 March – Moderation Day (Pupil Free Day for Years 4-12)

Friday 5 March – Junior School Swimming Carnival @ Queanbeyan. Information notes will be coming out this week and must be returned by the due date on the note. Please be mindful this is a swimming carnival so accurate indications of swimming ability are vital. Please click here for a copy of the information and permission form. Please click here for the program (indicative times only).

Year 4-6 after school homework assistance

Tuesday & Wednesday after school
3.30pm – 4.30pm
Junior School Library lab

Boys are to bring work with them what they may need assistance with. This could be homework, assignments, extension work or additional work set by their classroom teacher.
Email hellem@stedmunds.act.edu.au should you wish your son to attend.

Canteen
The School Canteen is looking for volunteers to help.  If you are able to spare 1 hour per month (10.30am to 11.30am) we would love to see you.
Please ring Pam on 62390649 if you can help.

Athletics Carnival Date Change – Please note we have changed the date of our Junior School Athletics Carnival (now one day earlier 24 March) to cater for the students who qualify for the South Weston Swimming Carnival (25 March). This change is now reflected in the school calendar online.
