Junior School News: Week 3, Term 1, 2021

It was fantastic to meet many of our newest families at the Welcome Evening last Wednesday. I hope you were able to chat with some of our staff, senior leaders and fellow new parents and students.

PE & Sport News
A reminder that our first carnival of the year is the Swimming Carnival at Queanbeyan on Friday 5 March. All entries are currently being collated by Mr Fox and a schedule of events and approximate timings will be made available in the coming weeks. Just a reminder that Day 10 in the timetable is set aside for an extra sports lesson. Your son should wear his PE gear to and from school every Day 10.

Anaphylaxis
Please note that we have a number of students who can have life threatening reactions to contact with various nuts. We would ask that you refrain from sending nuts of any kind in lunch boxes. We understand that nuts are nutritious and delicious but for the safety of our community we would ask these be saved for outside school hours.

Library News
The Junior School Library is open lunchtimes every day.  Lunchtime activities include reading, drawing, cards and board games. Boys are permitted to use the Computer Lab at lunchtime and are encouraged to work on class assignments in this time. Passes for the library are given out by classroom teachers each day.

Tuesday Lunch will be the only day the Computer Lab will be closed. This day will be called TECH FREE Tuesday so students can have a break from technology to engage with one another and participate in the lunchtime activities mentioned above.

2020 Sacraments – Parents and Carers will soon receive a letter from Ms Cusack regarding parish-based sacramental programs. As St Edmund’s is not a parish-based school, all sacraments are completed at your local parish. Your local parish should already have a timeline of events published for each sacrament.

Tuesday 23 February 9.30am – 10.30am – Opening School Mass at school. The school will celebrate the beginning of the school year with an opening school Mass. This will be a whole College event. Unfortunately, due to Covid-safe requirements, we only have a few invited parents/carers of students receiving leadership badges.

Wednesday 24 February – Friday 26 February – Year 6 Camp. All information is provided on the notes that have been emailed home. Thank you to all parents who volunteered to assist with the camp. We had so many volunteers we had to hold a draw and selected parents have been informed.

Tuesday 2 March – Moderation Day (Pupil Free Day for Years 4-12)

Friday 5 March – Junior School Swimming Carnival @ Queanbeyan. Information notes will be coming out this week and must be returned by the due date on the note. Please be mindful this is a swimming carnival so accurate indications of swimming ability are vital. Please click here for a copy of the information and permission form. Please click here for the program (indicative times only).

Canteen
The School Canteen is looking for volunteers to help.  If you are able to spare 1 hour per month (10.30am to 11.30am) we would love to see you.  Please ring Pam on 62390649 if you can help.

Year 4-6 after school homework assistance
Tuesday & Wednesday after school
3.30pm – 4.30pm
Junior School Library lab
Boys are to bring work with them what they may need assistance with. This could be homework, assignments, extension work or additional work set by their classroom teacher.
Email hellem@stedmunds.act.edu.au should you wish your son to attend.

Athletics Carnival Date Change – Please note we have changed the date of our Junior School Athletics Carnival (now one day earlier 24 March) to cater for the students who qualify for the South Weston Swimming Carnival (25 March). This change is now reflected in the school calendar online.
