Junior School News: Week 5, Term 2, 2021

Well done to our Year 5 students who completed Naplan testing last week. Students were relaxed but focused. Naplan testing gives a snapshot of academic progress and will be a useful tool for school and home to use in discussions about future academic targets. Junior School teachers are currently engaging in Monday afternoon professional learning about the use of data, work samples and the Australian Curriculum literacy and numeracy progressions to assist in setting individual learning targets for the students in their classes. There will also be a focus on the spelling program, ‘Sound Waves’ in Year 4 and Year 5 and Bring Your Own Device program in Year 6.

Year 5 Balloon Cars – Once again to lighten the mood during and after Naplan week, Year 5 put their engineering skills to the test, battling out qualifiers, heats, semi-finals and a superb grand final in the annual Balloon Car spectacle. I was glad to be able to witness the scenes, reminiscent of the Raiders last premiership, when Fatai Fenukitau narrowly defeated Roman Spano in the final. Fatai later remarked that it was the best day of his life. Thank you to Mr Bell and Ms Cusack for organising. Fatai’s win was the first from 5 Blue in 15 years, ending a remarkable run of victories from 5 White.

College Cabaret – Thursday 20 May. I look forward to seeing the Junior School students perform during this 4-12 event.

Junior School Assembly – Thursday 27 May at 2.25pm. We look forward to celebrating achievements within the classroom. Parents/carers of students receiving awards will be notified approximate a week prior.

South Weston Cross Country – Wednesday 2 June. Students who have qualified have been notified and should have brought a permission form home. A bus will be ready to take students to and from the venue at 8.45am from the Grandstand. Please note parents/carers are welcome to come and watch and may also choose to transport their son. The bus should return to school before lunch.
