Junior School News: Week 5 Term 3, 2021

Last Thursday it was wonderful to have so many parents and guests at our Junior School assembly. Congratulations to all students who received awards on the day.

Staff News – Congratulations to Holly Ellem (6 Gold class teacher) on news that she is expecting. We wish her and her family all the best and we are excited to welcome the newest addition to their family in 2022.

Extended Reality Sessions – Over the next few weeks, students in Year 5 and Year 6 are being given opportunities to learn via augmented and virtual reality learning resources created by our very own senior students. This exciting opportunity sits nicely within our wider mentoring program and tailored learning pathways. The resources are across different subject areas including History, Science and Mathematics. The response from students who have been so far has been incredible. The hope is that our younger students get inspired by what can be achieved through the use of different technologies and that they may one day choose this pathway as they move through St Edmund’s and into their working life. Thank you to Ms Maher for her wonderful facilitation of this program.

Moderation Day 2, Thursday 12 August – Please note that as per the school calendar this is a pupil-free day. Teachers will be involved in professional learning on this day.

Safe Online Together Seminars – Please note that if your son is in Year 5 or Year 6 he participated in a seminar today aiming to give him strategies to ease tension around screen use in the home. If parents/carers are interested, there is an optional free follow up session next Tuesday 17 August from 6pm-8pm at the College. Sign up details and more information is available in a different notice in Vortex.

Year 5 Camp – Monday 9 August – Wednesday 11 August and Friday 13 August. Students in Year 5 have enjoyed a modified program this week. Although it could never replicate going to The Pines, Ms Cusack and Mr Bell have worked very hard to provide an engaging and enriching program of events this week. Thank you also to the many parent volunteers who have assisted this week.

South Weston Athletics – Wednesday 18 August. Please note that Mr Fox can no longer make this event so selected students will need to check in and out with Mr Kelly or Mr Richardson on the day. Letters with events and event timings have gone home with selected students.

BOOKWEEK (Week 7)
On Thursday 26 August all students in the Junior School will have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character. They will then participate in a parade to celebrate books and reading. This is a fun event which everyone is encouraged to be involved in so start preparing your costume soon. The theme is ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’.

Year 6 Transition to Year 7 – A big thank you to all the students who have been involved in our Year 6 Runner’s program. Hopefully this has given our Year 6 students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the full College layout ahead of further transition events to come this semester. Please see below for some key dates as part of our transition program.
Monday 18 October – Year 7 2022 Orientation Day
Tuesday 2 November – Year 7 2022 Information Night
Thursday 4 November – Year 6 Retreat

Homework Club – Mrs Ellem will be running homework club from Weeks 2-9 this term on Tuesdays/Wednesdays. Please email her hellem@stedmunds.act.edu.au with a day’s notice should you wish to book your son/s in.
