Junior School News: Week 6, Term 2, 2018

Last week our Junior School students participated in the College Walkathon. The students were extremely well behaved and the lake looked tremendous on the last day of Autumn. It was a wonderful community event and the staff were extremely proud of the Junior School students and their attitude towards the event. Thank you to all of the families that have donated to the event with proceeds going toward refurbishment of the hall for our performing arts department and other College activities.

We are very proud of our two Da Vinci Decathlon teams that represented the school at Canberra Grammar last week. The teams competed in many different academic domains across the one day competition with over 400 students from around Canberra and regional NSW. Well done to our Year 5 team who came 1st in Ideation (Philosophy) and 3rd in Cartography (map reading).

Congratulations to our Year 5/6 Matt Giteau Cup rugby team who participated in the Southern NSW Primary Schools Cup at GIO Stadium on Sunday afternoon prior to the Brumbies match. Thank you to Mr Fox for organising and well done to all involved. Our team won two out of three matches to finish Runner’s Up. It was also nice to be present for the club march at half time where many of the U10 players joined in. Thank you to Alex Keillor (Thomas’ father) for his assistance with this.

On Monday Mr Fox took a team of 20 students to the South Weston Cross Country Carnival at Stromlo. Well done to Henry Meggitt (1st U12), Lewis Marshall (4th U12), BJ Fitzpatrick (9th U12) and Jesse Borghouts (3rd U10). These boys will now compete for South Weston at the ACT Carnival.

A little note on Video games – last term I spoke to Junior School students and parents at our Junior School assembly about the importance of moderation in regards to video game use. You may be aware of a popular game called Fortnite which is currently extremely popular across the globe. I spoke about the fact that although these games are fun and offer some relaxation, there are some possible negative impacts on learning and attitude towards school. Every boy is different. Whilst some boys can cope with more screen time than others, some tend to be more prone to ‘techno tantrums’. Some of the more extreme responses to too much time on video games could be increased anxiety or school refusal. Please note that our classroom teachers consistently reinforce messages around the importance of moderation in terms of video game use and we are always willing to support families in any way we can.
