Junior School News: Week 7, Term 1, 2018

Last Friday we enjoyed the first formal Junior School academic assembly for the year. Congratulations to all of the students who received certificates and to those that assisted with leadership, speaking and presenting roles. I spoke with the students about the importance of reading and how the launch of our book fair should assist boys looking to spark their interest in reading once again. The library looks fantastic and Mr O’Rourke has done a terrific job in helping bring the books to life. I also spoke about a new literacy intervention program that the school is looking to implement called MacqLit. MacqLit is a reading program underpinned by 10 years of research. We will use data and teacher input to select students who we think will benefit most from being involved in the program. Parents who have sons selected to be involved will be invited to an information session to be held later this term. Both our Numeracy (Quicksmart) and our Literacy (MacqLit) programs will begin in Term 2.

Laurie Daley Shield (League) and Matt Giteau Cup (Union) Champions

St Edmund’s sent teams to these two events over the last fortnight. Congratulations to all boys who competed. Mr Fox and Mr Balmaks were super proud of their effort and sportsmanship. Our Year 4 team performed well to reach the ACT final of the Laurie Daley Shield and the semi-final of the Matt Giteau Cup. Well done to our Year 5/6 teams who were crowned ACT Champions for the Laurie Daley Shield and the Matt Giteau Cup. Captains Jonah Anderson and Billy Lachlan presented the respective trophies to Mr Zavone at our College assembly on Wednesday this week.
