Literacy Drop-In Classes

Our morning literacy drop-in classes will give your child an opportunity to really hone and practice their basic literacy skills. Each week will focus on an essential literacy skill. Time will be spent explaining its purpose, how it looks in practice and we will work with each student to implement it in their written work. As each week focuses on a different skill, your child can choose which sessions to attend.

Time: 8 am onwards
Day: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Venue: Classroom Y70

Themes

  • Nouns, verbs & adjectives
  • Structure of a narrative.
  • How to write a PEEL paragraph
  • How can I make my writing more creative – A look at adjectives & descriptive imagery
  • How to write a rationale?
  • Sentence structure

What does the class look like?

  • Each class will begin with a wwarm-upgame – literacy focus
  • Discussion of the theme
  • Worksheet/activity
  • Recap – exit slip?

Sample lesson

  • Noun Derby
  • Discuss sthe tructure of narrative – what does each section mean? What does it look like in practice?
  • Read sample short narrative – activity – sequencing , comprehension
  • Structure mini test

Focus:

  • Go slow, allow for deep comprehension
  • Answer all questions
  • Work in small groups or individually
  • Don’t focus on ‘finishing’ the task – it’s about exposure, practise and asking questions
