Principal’s Message: Week 2, Term 4, 2018

To the family and friends of St Edmund’s College,

ANZAC Day Schools Award

I am very pleased to announce this week that St Edmund’s College is the Australian Capital Territory winner of the secondary school category in the 2018 Anzac Day Schools’ Awards.  The College entry comprised extensive research into various conflicts, with visits by Year 9 – 12 students to the Australian War Memorial being of benefit to their research into the topics of the First and Second World Wars, Korean War, Vietnam War and contemporary conflicts.  The judges believed the entry demonstrated extensive involvement across the College and a high level of engagement with students and the community. The entry included the integration of Anzac issues into our curriculum, the Anzac Day Assembly, as well as research and exploratory trips to the Australian War Memorial.  The culmination of our entry was the planting of the Lone Pine at the front of the College and the significant ceremony that accompanied this event.   I would like to congratulate Mr Matt Calder and Ms Donella Walker for their hard work and efforts in working with our students and co-ordinating the College entry.

We are very proud of our association with the Australian War Memorial, our legacy of being a War Memorial high school and our strong connections with the Defence community, and we will continue to recognise and commemorate the service and sacrifice of Australia’s service men and women.

Prestigious Achievement

I am aware that this news was reported in Vortex last week, but I would like to add my congratulations to our College captain Zane Hogan.  Not only has Zane performed brilliantly in the front row for the Australian Schools Rugby team and captained the team, Zane has also been awarded the prestigious Merv and Iris Allen Award.  This award is presented annually at the formal post Tri-Nations test match dinner and is presented to a member of the Australian Schools team for “Best Team Man” for overall contribution to the Australian Squad. The recipient is chosen to reflect outstanding commitment, character and leadership.  Zane is the second Eddies player to receive this honour following in the footsteps of Luke Gersekowski who was given the award in 2016.  Congratulations to Zane for this wonderful achievement and honour.

Congratulations also to:

  • Jonah Anderson (Year 6, Treacy House) on being selected as team captain representing ACT in Hobart for the National Touch Football Championships
  • Angus Jones (Year 10, O’Brien House) on winning a bronze medal at the Pacific Cup Karate Championships in New Caledonia
  • Sebastian Bellas (Year 10, Treacy House) who will represent the ACT in Javelin and Discus in the 2018 All Schools Athletic Championship in Cairns in December. Joining Sebastian at this national event will be Erek Lukowski (Year 11, Treacy House) and Edward Osei-Nketia (Year 11, Treacy House). Congratulations to all of these students.

Term 4

The last term of school is already upon us. I have asked our teaching staff to ensure that our boys are well occupied for the term with constructive and creative work, and I also asked staff to continue to be vigilant in terms of the way in which the boys are wearing their uniforms, in the way they are treating each other and in their general demeanour. I would ask our parents to do the same – ensuring that the boys are always leaving home with the appropriate uniform and to check that homework and assessment work is being completed well.  Term 4 is traditionally the term where sometimes our students become a little lackadaisical due to a number of factors – fatigue, the heat, the perception that the end of the year is coming up and so forth. If we keep a close eye on the little things and ensure that they are done well, then we will finish the term and the year in a positive manner. I wish all of our students the very best for a successful Term 4.

Loving God,
Help us to know of your amazing love in our lives,
with genuine, sacrificial and unconditional love.
May we love everyone in you and for you,
praising you by our every action.
Amen.

Blessed Edmund Rice, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our Hearts, forever.
