St Edmund’s Cricket Season – Update

Cricket ACT have advised that the cricket season will commence on the 5th, 6th and 7th November. According to the ACT’s Covid-19 Pathway Forward document, training in groups of up to 25 can occur from Friday 15 October. This gives each club a small window to nominate teams for the different stages and divisions offered by Cricket ACT. Registrations have been slow to come in which is understandable but we will need to confirm teams with Cricket ACT by Monday 25 October. Therefore, I would ask that any player wishing to play cricket in 2021/2022 be registered by Thursday 21 October.

The following events will help St Edmund’s Cricket Club be as prepared for the season as possible:

ST EDMUND’S COLLEGE CANBERRA CRICKET

2021/2022 SEASON

Welcome to the 2021/2022 cricket season. The St Edmund’s College Cricket Club exists to provide an effective cricket support infrastructure for St Edmund’s students to play cricket and develop their cricket skills and interest in the game.

When is the season?
The season will commence on 5/6/7 November. Play will break after the round on 17/18/19 December for the Christmas holidays and recommence 29/30 January 2022 (4 February for Friday games). The season will finish end of March 2022. Grading for students interested in playing division 1 was due to be held on Sunday 5 September and subsequent trainings sessions beginning the week after the trial. However, due to the ACT Lockdown and restrictions we will need to postpone the trials and training until further notice. Please see table below for a guide regarding training and match days.

When will my son play?
While scheduled playing times are not known until closer to the start of the season, a draft indication based on previous seasons is provided below. The division that your son plays in will be determined at grading/early training sessions.

Age GroupTrainingFridaySaturdaySunday
Stage 1

(Previously Under 10/11)

WednesdayUngraded

5.00 – 8.00pm

Division 1*

9:00 – 12:00

Stage 2

(Previously Under 12/13)

Twice per week, according to coach availability. Division 1

Stage 3

 First XI

8:45 – 12:00

Division 2

8.30am – 11.30am

*Please note that we did have Stage 1 teams in both Friday ungraded and division 1 last year. This meant teams in both divisions were not very competitive. Coaches will assess this situation at trials/initial trainings to decide on whether to field a division 1 team or field more competitive Friday teams. Our underlying priority is for players to enjoy their cricket.

How are teams run?
Volunteers are essential for the support and future of St Edmund’s College Cricket. Please mark the appropriate box when you complete the on-line registration form if you are able to coach, manage, umpire or score this season. Please note – ACT regulations mean that it is mandatory for all volunteers to hold a WWVP card. WWVP cards can be obtained through Access Canberra and are free of charge for volunteers.

Stage not age
Cricket Australia has begun the transition from age to stage teams. The idea is for players to play their format stage at an appropriate level rather than being restricted by their age group. Cricket ACT have committed to implementing the stage not age system. This will allow for St Edmund’s to enter a division 1 and division 2 team in stages which will better cater for students’ abilities.

What age does my son have to be to play?
Boys can play cricket from Year 4 to Year 12. Depending on date of birth (see table below), your son will play in a certain stage. In certain cases, age group exemptions can be applied, however in the first instance it is expected that all players play in their correct stage group.

Stage GroupDate of birth range
Stage 11/9/2010tolater
Stage 21/9/2008to31/8/2010
Stage 31/9/2004to31/8/2008

Boys not at St Edmund’s who gain enrolment for next year are encouraged to play for St Edmund’s College this coming season. If parents of Year 3 students feel they will benefit from another year in T20 Blast cricket it is suggested to play at a local centre. To play Stage 1 Friday evenings, it is recommended that cricketers can bowl 3-4 balls on the pitch per over. See ‘When is Registration’ below.

Do I have to provide any cricket gear?
For health and hygiene reasons, it is recommended that all players provide their own box (protector) and helmet. While there will be some gear available to borrow from team bags, students are recommended to have their own equipment.

What do players wear?
All players are to observe the dress requirements for St Edmunds College Cricket, i.e. official playing shirt embroidered with the College crest to be purchased from the school uniform shop, and white/cream trousers which can be purchased from any sports store. Players should wear the Club’s broad-brimmed cricket hat or St Edmunds cap. These items are available only from the College Clothing Shop.
