Students come face to face with infantrymen

On Wednesday 22 August, two Year 9 History classes were fortunate enough to hear from Michael Crowther and John Potter, father of James, on the fascinating details of the First World War.

Through the immersive power of historical artefacts, real and recreated, student learnt of the decision-making behind British and German uniform design and the importance of materials and colour; shell-shock prevention measures; tools and provisions; training and expectations regarding hand-to-hand combat; the logic of and counter-measures to chemical warfare in WWI; the emergent value of grenades and grenadiers; and firing techniques of British and German infantrymen.

This was an invaluable experience for our Year 9 students and a fantastic example of the powerful links that this College has with the Defence community.
