VET and Careers Update: Week 3, Term 2, 2020

As we are getting closer to being back at the College together, we wanted to provide a couple of updates from the VET and Careers world to support you and your Son during this very different time.

The White Card and Asbestos course that was scheduled for Week 4 has been moved to week 9, 22nd and 23rd of June. Permission slips and enrollment forms will be sent out over the next couple of weeks.

Employment opportunities have already started to ramp up as we draw closer to mid-year, providing 1st year apprenticeship positions in Mechanics, Horticulture, Plastering, Rendering, Carpentry, Electrical, Painting, Roof Plumbing and Cabinet Making. These positions would be ideal for any year 12 accredited student keen to kick-start their career. For more information regarding these positions students should be directed to Mr Hausen – ahausen@stedmunds.act.edu.au

The University Application process has begun and students are encouraged to contact Rebecca Jarman rjarman@stedmunds.act.edu.au  with any questions regarding the process.

The first critical application deadline is for the Australian National University (ANU) with applications closing on 25 May.  The ANU has altered its application criteria for this year to take into account the impact of COVID-19.  It is possible to arrange individual appointments with ANU Recruitment staff to support you in your application.  If you would like to arrange an appointment please email rjarman@stedmunds.act.edu.au and Mrs Jarman will support you to get that appointment scheduled.

Prospective University of Canberra (UC) applicants will have the opportunity to attend a UC presentation (virtually) at the College on 27 May where their questions will be answered about the changes to UC’s application process with early offers being made in August.  UC has also scheduled time for individual appointments with prospective applicants before the end of Term 2 so that everyone is supported in these very different times.

During Careers week – 18-22 May all students in Years 7-12 will be given access to an exciting Digital Careers Expo experience where they will be able to attend different virtual presentations across a variety of sectors including listening to Entrepreneurs and Elite Athletes.  Login details will be provided to all students by the end of this week.
