Junior School News: Term 3, Week 6, 2024

Last week was certainly a fun and exciting week for students and staff. We had an Experience Eddies Day for prospective students on Monday and we had over 80 students come a taste a sample of life at Eddies. Thank you to our student helpers who were crucial in making our guests feel welcome. Enrolments are increasing at the school year on year and in 2025 we will require three Year 4 classes to cater for this increase.

Our Book Week Parade was once again a resounding success thanks to the students’ eagerness and resourcefulness. The costumes were amazing, many that must have taken hours to prepare. Thank you to all involved, it really was a wonderful celebration of reading here at the College. I said to the entire St Edmund’s staff at our morning briefing on Monday that we are really blessed to have such keen and creative students and to have nearly 200 boys dressed up to celebrate the joy of reading demonstrates the special school community we are a part of.

On Thursday, over 30 students represented the school at the South Weston athletics carnival. Congratulations to all that competed on the day. Please note any student who placed in the top four of his event/s will now go on to represent South Weston at the ACT Championships, to be held on Tuesday September 17 at Woden Park. More information will be provided to successful students. Highlights from the day included:

On Friday, our Year 6 students participated in an Army STEM Incursion where they were able to use virtual reality to ride in tanks, helicopters and trucks armed with missiles. They also received training in how to fly a helicopter and then had a chance to use the flight simulator to fly around Syndey Harbour. We would like to thank the Army STEM engagement team for putting on this event and working with our students throughout the day. A special thanks to Anne-Maree (current Year 6 parent), as this program is usually reserved for students in High School.

Friday 30 August – Father’s Day Mass and Morning Tea. We are looking forward to hosting all fathers, grandfathers and father-figures in our community who have RSVP’d to this event. The Mass will be at 9.30am in the RJ Wallace Hall, followed by morning tea at 10.30am. You must have RSVP’d to this event to attend.

Year 6 into Year 7 – Please note that students currently enrolled in Year 6 do not need to re-enrol into Year 7. Year 6 student enrolment automatically continues into Year 7.

Year 4-6 After School Homework Club – Homework Club will run Tuesdays and Wednesdays Week 2 – Week 9 after school 3.30pm – 4.30pm with Mrs Ellem. This occurs in the Junior School library. Parents/carers are asked to sign up to Homework Club through Clipboard.

Year 6 Runners Program – As a part of our Year 6 into High School transition program, we will be enlisting the assistance of Year 6 students to help as runners. As runners, the students will get to know the school layout very well ahead of Year 7. The students will work in pairs for a full day (learning remotely between jobs).

Hair Policy – Thank you to all parents/carers for keeping your son/s haircuts in line with the school’s uniform and hair policy. At times barbers may make mistakes. If they are informed of their mistake, many will fix the haircut (in line with our policy) at no extra charge. Could I please ask that all parents/carers familiarise themselves with the hair policy so that students can get about their daily work without teacher’s asking them about their haircuts. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Hair should be kept neat, tidy and clean at all times and not grown or styled into an extreme or exaggerated fashion.

Hair should be of uniform length and no shorter than a number ‘two’.

Students are not allowed to have lines or designs shaved into their hair nor grow long sections of hair that can be fashioned into ‘top buns’, plaits, undercuts, braids, ‘rats tails’, ‘mohawks’ or ‘mullets’ etc.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up – Please do not use the staff carpark (off Canberra Avenue) to drop or collect students before and after school. This is a dangerous place for our students to be moving through and we would like to keep this area for staff only. Thank you for helping to keep our community safe.
