Junior School News: Week 2 Term 2, 2022

This week we have an opportunity to stop, reflect upon, and celebrate all of the mothers, grandmothers and mother-figures in our lives. This year at school we have been focusing on the theme, ‘Because of her, we can’ – with a focus on Mary.

Mary, mother of Jesus, has a special place in our hearts. Mary certainly knew the pain and worry associated with motherhood but she also knew of its joy, watching and helping her son develop into a magnificent man.

In reflecting on Mother’s Day, we acknowledge and celebrate mothers and mothering. Mothering is an ongoing relationship of worry, love and care.

This Friday at our Mother’s Day Mass and Morning Tea, we have the opportunity to thank all mothers and mother-figures in our community. It is always beautiful to see our students interact with their mothers and others on these occasions. I hope all of our EdMums have a wonderful Sunday.

12/U ACT Swimming Championships – Wednesday 4 May.

Founder’s Day Mass and Activities – Thursday 5 May. Students are to wear their formal Winter uniform to school for Mass in the morning. Mass will be held at the Cathedral in Manuka (students will walk to and from the venue). Celebration activities will be held after our return to school. Students may change into blue and white clothes for the remainder of the day. There will be no need to change back into formal uniform at the end of the day. If students would like to purchase food/drink items from the fair and market stalls, they will need to purchase tokens with money either leading up to or on the day. Please note the canteen will be open as normal.

College Open Day – Saturday 7 May (10am – 1pm). Thank you to all of the student volunteers who will assist on this day, around co-curricular commitments.

Experience Eddies Day – Monday 9 May. On this day prospective students will come to St Edmund’s to experience a day as an Eddies boy. If you know of any interested families, please direct them to our College website.

Matt Giteau Cup (Rugby Union) – Thursday 26 May. For Year 5/6 teams, due to the numbers of students interested, trials will not be held. However, some training sessions may be held over the coming weeks at lunchtimes if Mr Fox deems necessary for arranging teams. Year 4 may need to trial, depending on numbers of interested players, as we have too many registered players for one team and not enough for two teams. He will communicate Year 4 trial information with the students at some point next week. Permission notes will be sent home sometime next week.

Year 5/6 Touch Football Gala Day – Tuesday 31 May. Following on from our touch football unit in Physical Education at the end of Term 1, we will be entering approximately 6 teams of interested students into the ACT Touch Football Gala Day (Southside). Notes will come home with students who have shown an interest next week.

Year 5 NAPLAN Testing 2022 – Week 3/4. Mr Zach Holmes has placed information regarding these tests in previous editions of the Vortex in Term 1. If you have any questions regarding your son’s participation in this testing, special provisions, or exemptions, please contact Zach: zholmes@stedmunds.act.edu.au or your son’s teacher. These tests will run from Tuesday 10 May – Friday 13 May with catch-up sessions held on Monday 16 May and Tuesday 17 May for anyone who is absent during initial tests.

The order of the tests will be: Writing, Reading, Language Conventions, and Numeracy.
