Junior School News: Week 9 Term 3, 2022

Last Thursday we had seven students represent South Weston at the ACT 12/U Athletics Championships at Woden Park. Congratulations to Hugh Gibson (4 White) who placed 1st in shot put and discus, 2nd in Long Jump, and 3rd in the 100m and 200m. Also, congratulations to Brayden Kent (6 Gold) who finished 2nd in the 100m. Well done to all the students who competed on the day – a wonderful achievement.

Cricket Season – please note a letter about the 2022/2023 cricket season has been sent to all current and prospective families. Trials/training details are in the letter and all registrations need to be in by September 30th.

Staff Carpark (off Canberra Avenue) – Parents/Carers are asked not to use the staff carpark as a drop-off or pick-up location before or straight after school. This is due to safety concerns of our students. Please use the main semi-circular driveway or other exterior boundary options.

Eddies Sleepout – Friday 16 September – The annual Eddies Sleepout for House and Home is being held on Friday 16 September. Boys from Yr 4-12 are asked to sleep for a night in the College Gymnasium to gain a very small insight into what it is like to sleep rough.

During the night boys will participate in awareness raising activities around homelessness. The money we raise will go towards purchasing household furniture for the mothers and babies Karinya House supports, so the places of accommodation for these mums and babies can feel more like a home, rather than just somewhere to live.

Home in Queanbeyan has requested the money goes towards purchasing healthy food for the resident’s pantry. With the rising costs of fresh produce, it has become more difficult to ensure that residents are having healthy meals, which are vital for good mental health. Students who would like to participate can collect a permission note and sponsor card from Ms Cusack.

Queen’s Memorial Public Holiday – Thursday 22 September – Please note that the school will be closed on this day.

Junior School Academic Assembly – Friday 23 September at 11.30 am in the Hall – Our Junior School assembly has been moved to Week 10 due to the number of events using the Hall in Week 9. Parents/carers of students receiving certificates will be notified by the end of this week and are welcome to attend.

Junior School Camps – Please note that due to postponements of earlier camps, we will now have a busy Term 4 with camps at Tuross Head, NSW. Please note camp costs will be included in Term 4 fee statements. If your son is definitely not attending camp, please notify your son’s class teacher by Thursday 22 September so final costings can be determined and applied. Dates for each year group are below and you will receive more information from class teachers over the coming weeks. Please also note that camp permission and information will be available online through the parent portal.

Year 5 Camp: Monday 17 October – Wednesday 19 October (Term 4, Week 2)

Year 4 Camp: Thursday 20 October – Friday 21 October (Term 4, Week 2)

Year 6 Camp: Monday 7 November – Wednesday 9 November (Term 4, Week 5)

Homework Club – Mr Kelly will be running homework club from Weeks 1-9 this term on Tuesdays/Wednesdays. Please email him dkelly@stedmunds.act.edu.au with a day’s notice should you wish to book your son/s in.

Hair Policy – Thank you to all parents/carers for keeping your son/s haircuts in line with the school’s uniform and hair policy. At times barbers may make mistakes. If they are informed of their mistake, many will fix the haircut (in line with our policy) at no extra charge. Could I please ask that all parents/carers familiarise themselves with the hair policy so that students can get about their daily work without teachers asking them about their haircuts. Thank you for your assistance with this.

  • Hair should be kept neat, tidy, and clean at all times and not grown or styled into an extreme or exaggerated fashion.
  • Hair should be above the shoulder in length (above the bottom of the school shirt collar) and no shorter than a number ‘two’.
  • Students are not allowed to have lines or designs, shaved into their hair nor grow long sections of hair that can be fashioned into ‘top buns’, plaits, dreadlocks, braids, ‘rats tails’, ‘mohawks’ or ‘mullets’ etc.
  • Hair should be evenly graded and/or blended, of natural colour, warn off the face, and should not obstruct sight. Hair requiring to be tied back off the face may be necessary but only as a low bun.
