Managing Stress & Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

Balancing Act: Strategies for Managing Stress and Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

In the fast-paced environment of school life, balancing academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and social commitments can be challenging. The pressure to excel can sometimes feel overwhelming, leading to stress and anxiety. However, maintaining a healthy mind and life balance is crucial for both academic success and personal well-being.

Prioritise Self-Care
Simple habits like getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, and staying hydrated can make a significant difference in how you feel and perform. It is important that our students aim for at least 8 hours of sleep per night and incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, and proteins into their diet to keep their energy levels stable. I recommend that students utilise the ‘sleep focus’ functionality on their mobile devices. Sleep Focus helps reduce distractions before and during bedtime. For example, it can filter out notifications and phone calls, and it can signal to others that you’re not available.

Stay Organised
Organisation is key to managing stress. Use a planner or digital calendar to keep track of assignments, tests, and other commitments. Break down larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks and set realistic deadlines for each. This approach not only helps you stay on top of your workload but also reduces the anxiety of last-minute cramming. It is encouraged that students in years 7 and 8 utilise their diary which was issued at the beginning of the year. Should students need assistance in planning their assessment schedule, we encourage them to speak with their tutor for assistance with this.

Stay Active
Physical activity is a natural stress reliever. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers and mood elevators. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a bike ride, yoga, or a team sport, find an activity you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine.

Maintain Social Connections
Spending time with friends and family is crucial for emotional support. Make time to socialise and engage in activities that bring you joy and laughter. Building a strong support network can provide a sense of belonging and security, which is essential for mental well-being.

Seek Help When Needed
If stress becomes overwhelming, it’s important to seek help without hesitation. Reach out to a trusted teacher, school counsellor, or mental health professional for guidance, support, and resources to help you manage stress and maintain balance. For assistance, you can contact our school counsellor, Sharon Harrison, at sharrison@sec.act.edu.au.

Managing stress and keeping a healthy mind involves a combination of self-care, organisation, physical activity, and social support. By integrating these practices into your daily routine, you can navigate the demands of school life more effectively and enjoy a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. It’s okay to seek help when you need it and to take time for yourself. After all, a healthy mind is the foundation for a successful and fulfilling life.
