TAS Department – HOME in Queanbeyan Community Project

Earlier this term the Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) Department, and in particular Mr Watson’s construction students, had the opportunity to combine their practical skills and knowledge with a community-based project involving HOME in Queanbeyan.

We have a number of links with HOME in Queanbeyan through current and past staff and student involvement. These connections, in particular, gave us the pleasing opportunity to meet Anne Pratt and her staff there and, more importantly, the wonderful residents. HOME in Queanbeyan staff work to provide a safe and loving environment where residents are encouraged to live active and fulfilling lives within their community.

HOME in Queanbeyan is a loving place for men and women with mental illness who can’t live independently or may be at risk of homelessness. St Edmund’s College is very proud of its association with Home in Queanbeyan. We have been involved in fundraisers, meal donations, staff works of Mercy days, community projects and garden maintenance for many years.

This term Mr Watson, Mr Zarb and the Construction students enjoyed the process of making a Greenhouse. The staff and students were responsible for the required landscaping, timber sleeper installation, road base and paving requirements. Then our students assembled the Greenhouse and fixed it in place. The class represented the College well and I thank them for their enthusiasm and maturity they displayed while completing this wonderful community project. We look forward to continuing our school connection with HOME.

Please note that HOME in Queanbeyan does remarkable and vital work for the Queanbeyan community and receives no government funding of any sort. They survive and thrive purely on the kindness of the community. If you are able to donate either time, services or money it will go a long way and means to world to HOME’s residents and the local community that depend on it.

Contact HOME on 6284 2409 or check out the work they do through their website – homeqbn.org, tell them “I’m an Eddies parent and would love to help out.”
