Co-curricular offering in 2018

All parents, carers and guardians will receive an email detailing the registration process and expectations for co-curricular in 2018. Co-curricular offerings are explained below:

Australian Rule Football

Australian Rules Football at St Edmund’s College offers students the opportunity to play one of the country’s great games. The school and the committee are aiming to provide students with the opportunity to continue playing the game from the Under 10 age group through to Under 17. St Edmund’s competes in the local competition each Saturday during the season, and has had a number of players go on to play in various representative squads and the ACT at the different carnivals held Australia wide. St Edmund’s has expert coaches on staff who are keen to work with your son/s on their skill development.

Basketball

Basketball is the only sport at St Edmund’s College that offers students the opportunity to participate all year round. The school aims to provide an appropriate level of competition for each student with teams entered in most divisions across all age groups. The local competition sees students compete against other private schools as well as clubs in the ACT in both the Summer and Winter seasons. Staff and parents coach the teams providing development and enjoyment for students.

Chess Club

The Chess Club gives students the opportunity to practice weekly and challenge a number of their peers and Mr Bell in the game of chess.

Coding

Coding is a new program for 2018 that expands on some programs run by our junior school librarian Mr O’Rourke. For students of all abilities that have an interest in computers and want to venture into the world of coding.

Cricket

Cricket at St Edmund’s College has teams in every age that compete in the local ACT Cricket Junior competition against local schools and clubs. The 1st XI plays in the ASC competition against the other private schools in Canberra in both T20 and one day competitions. Competitive games are spread across the weekend with no-competitive age groups playing on a Friday night. Staff and parents coach the teams providing development and enjoyment for students.

Debating

At least one side from every Year group in the Secondary school are nominated into various age divisions of the ACT Debating Competition. The College supports teams from Years 6, 7, 8, 9 & Year 10, complimented by our Senior sides. Students are required to prepare and present a major oral presentation (debate) each week during the course of two, six week seasons. During semester 2 year 5 students may also be invited to represent the school in the fictional words competition. Throughout both Semester’s, students develop their confidence and ability to compete against a range of school sides from throughout the region and are encouraged to debate with passion and a courage of their convictions.

Dragon Boating

Dragon Boating is one of the highlights of St Edmund’s College’s Summer Co-curricular options with students joined by St Clare’s students to practice and race. This provides a great social opportunity while learning the skills needed to send the boat down the course and outrace many opponents. Regatta’s take place throughout term 4 and early term 1 on Lake Burley Griffin with the opportunity for some inter-state regattas.

Football (Soccer)

Football has a prosperous history which has involved nearly every continent across the world. St Edmund’s College also has a rich history and Co-curricular is part of the rich tapestry that makes the school who we are today. In Football at St Edmund’s College, students compete against schools and clubs under the banner of Capital Football. With a combination of home and away games, the sport of football is one that is accessible to all students of many levels. Teamwork, resilience, patience and self-discipline are all skills which every young man at St Edmund’s College both possess and can strengthen on the field this season. Football is about working together, utilising strength and practising humility and so has no limit to who can excel.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics)

In 2018 STEAM will be a combination of successful STEMS and SIE programs that we have run in the past. With the makeup of this program still to be determined we ask you to sign up if interested and await details from the Coordinator. For students that are interested in computers, electronics and everything in between this is the activity for you.

Photography Club

The photography art club allows students to work in digital photographic and art based mediums, outside of any classes or formal teaching activities. This Co-curricular activity allows boys to work collaboratively on independent and skills based projects and entering independent photographic and art based competitions. This activity is open to students from year six to year twelve every Wednesday from 4.30pm – 5.00pm, and will commence week four until the end of the year.

Mountain Biking

Students bring bikes to school on Thursday morning where they are stored for the day. Students are taken to Mt Stromlo or Mt Majura in the afternoon by the College bus. Ride duration at both locations is about 1.5 hours and difficulty varies depending on rider experience. Emphasis is on developing rider skill, safety and participation. Students are returned to the College by 6pm. There will be the opportunity to participate in some weekend rides and Interschool Competitions depending on student interest and availability. This activity operates year round but does depend on availability of the College bus and the weather from week to week.

Rugby Union

Rugby Union is the biggest sport at St Edmund’s College with a strong history going back into the early days of the college. Over the years many Australian Schoolboys and Wallabies have been produced on the back of strong results in the local competition and NSW based Waratah Shield competition which has been won on several occasions. All matches take place on a Saturday with an equal amount of home and away games against local schools, clubs and some clubs based locally in NSW.

Junior Band

Junior Band is essentially an excellent training for young musicians in skills on their instruments and skills in playing together in a group. Commitment, striving to improve as musicians and having fun are the main necessities of being in Junior Band
