Junior School Design and Technology Program

In a world that is becoming increasingly complex, where success is driven not only by what you know but by what you can do with what you know, it’s more important than ever for our youth to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information.

I am very happy to announce that the TAS Department has implemented a Design and Technology program throughout the Junior School this year. St Edmund’s will be one of the very few schools in Canberra to offer this opportunity to all Year 4 to 6 students. Junior School students are researching and designing projects such as Scrap Offcut Timber Robots, Planes & what I would refer to as Abstract Sculptures to Paddle Pop Catapults and STEM extension activities.

The boys appear to be enjoying the hands-on nature of the subject and all of the students have been through an important safety course aimed at Primary School level. As Head of Department I have been very impressed with their behaviour in the workshop and very much look forward to spending more time in the workshop with the boys and watching their skills grow.
