Junior School News: Week 3, Term 2, 2020

Mother’s Day

I hope that everyone enjoyed a nice Mother’s Day and that the mothers in our community were celebrated. I  was particularly moved by the St Edmund’s Facebook post, featuring many current St Edmund’s mothers and grandmothers, and some beautiful vocals from one of our Junior School Leaders, Sonny Lauvao and his mother, Charlotte. Although we miss the annual Mother’s Day Mass this year, it was great to have that video to share with the ones we love. Thank you to Miss Cusack and Mrs Wilson for compiling the media presentation and to our brilliant vocalists.

Thank you

As we near the end of our online teaching and learning (fingers crossed we don’t need to pivot back at some point) I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the mothers, fathers, grandparents or siblings who have helped out the boys with their online teaching and learning. It was an immense contribution from so many people that helped make a terrible situation bearable and worthwhile. The teachers wish to thank anybody that assisted a Junior School boy with their learning over the past six weeks. With three children under 10 I have a fair idea what it might have been like for parents who needed to continue working fulltime and still offer support to their children with learning tasks. What we have achieved as a community during this time was significant. Our Junior School teachers had to become familiar with technical aspects of our learning platform and to learn a totally new way of connecting with your son/s. I am in awe of how much they learnt and produced in such a short time. This was pure, highly authentic professional learning based in reality with time pressures attached…and they excelled. Having a community ready to back their teaching staff, roll their own sleeves up and get on with things, helped to create a very successful online teaching and learning environment so thank you, thank you, thank you.

Return to face-to-face teaching

On Monday, we return to some sense of normality although there will still be differences. Junior School teachers will work with your son/s to reinforce new protocols, particularly around cleanliness, to help keep our community safe. We are conscious that boys will have different feelings about returning to school so please be assured that we will be taking every step possible to ensure your son’s wellbeing at this time.

Uniform

The uncertainty leading into this term may mean you haven’t had the opportunity to sort Winter uniform yet. Please note there will be a few days leeway offered to students in regards to uniform. This is to allow families the opportunity to get to the uniform shop to purchase required items. Please see the College website for details and ordering information.
