After being back at school now for four weeks, students should be getting used to set routines and timetables. It is helpful if parents/carers can sight the diary each night and work with their son to help them plan upcoming homework or assignment tasks. A reminder that homework club runs each Tuesday and Wednesday with Mr Kelly in the Junior School library from 3.30pm-4.30pm. Bookings can be made by emailing dkelly@stedmunds.act.edu.au. Thank you to Mr Roberts, Mr O’Rourke and Ms Roche for taking our Year 6 boys on camp to Tuross. They enjoyed lovely weather and many fun experiences together. We had our Ash Wednesday Liturgy last week and it was good to discuss things we could take on or give up for Lent. Thank you to Ms Cusack and her liturgy assistants for this service. We also enjoyed a beautiful opening school Mass at St Christopher’s last week. We are entering a time of the term where we will have regular significant events. I have outlined a few of them below.
Junior School Swimming Carnival – Friday 6 March @ Queanbeyan Pool. Please note that the program with approximate event times can be viewed at the bottom of this week’s JS News. Students can wear house coloured shirt and PE shorts and/or board shorts on the day (with swimmers underneath or packed in the bag. Please encourage your son to bring a hat, food and a water bottle on the day. If there is time at the end of the day, we usually have a staff v students relay. We would love to have a parent team if there enough keen swimmers to form a team of four! Bring your swimmers…you never know…In the event of light rain, we will likely try to push on with the carnival but if we need to cancel an email will go out as soon as possible. Please send your son/s ready for the carnival regardless.
Boys with books breakfast – we will be launching our book fair with a breakfast/reading opportunity for parents/carers and their son/s on the morning of Wednesday March 11 at 8am in the Junior School Library. Please come along and share in the joy of reading with your son (and perhaps buy some books while you are here). This invite is open to all parents/carers. We especially encourage as many Dads or other significant male role models to attend as possible. Having male role models showing an interest in reading with young men can have a profound and lasting impact and challenge certain stereotypes associated with reading. To assist us with catering, please email dkelly@stedmunds.act.edu.au with numbers of people attending. The Book Fair will be open Wednesday all day until 4.30pm (11 March) and before school (from 8am) on Thursday (12 March and Friday (13 March) until lunchtime. All orders are to be made online.
Junior School Assembly – Friday 13 March in the Hall at 9.10am. Please join us as we celebrate student learning and present academic awards to some of our Junior School students. There will be an opportunity for a tea/coffee and light refreshments afterwards. Parents/carers of students receiving awards will be notified with approximately one week’s notice.
Junior School Athletics Carnival – Thursday 19 March. More details to follow.
Matt Giteau Cup – Thursday 12 March. Please note the school is planning to take two teams to this event. Students will be notified if they have been selected. One Year 4 team and one combined Year 5/6 team will be selected.
