Junior School News: Week 5, Term 3, 2019

Thank you to all the parents and guests who were able to make our Junior School assembly last Friday. We had many academic awards to acknowledge and we also officially welcomed semester two leaders into their roles. Congratulations to Jesse Ruckert (4 White) on his violin item, which wowed the crowd. We were also able to recognise various sporting achievements, including those students who have made ACT representative sides in 2019.

College Sleep out and Father’s Day Mass

Every day we are reminded that there are many people in our community who, for a variety of reasons, have no permanent home. Organisations like Home in Queanbeyan are there to support those in our local community who have nowhere to call home. On Friday night students from Years 4-12 took take part in 2nd “Eddies sleep out for Home. For the first time the sleep out included students from Years 4, 5 and 6 who slept for one night in the College Gymnasium to gain a very small insight into what it is like to sleep rough. On the night the boys took part activities to gain a deeper awareness of the challenge of being homeless. Thank you to those students who took part in this service event.

The $10 the boys were asked to contribute towards by sleeping out for a night, will be used to purchase personal care supplies for those supported by Home in Queanbeyan. Thank you to Ms Cusack who helped organise the Junior School students for this event and spent a night on the Gym floor.

The invitations to the Father’s day mass have been sent home via email this week. This year this event is whole school and all fathers/grandfathers and guardians are most welcome. Mass will be celebrated in the College Chapel on Friday 30 August and morning tea will be served after Mass. If you are able to attend please respond to the link in the email or Vortex.

Book week – ‘Reading is my secret power’

We will be holding a costume parade on Friday 23 August in the Hall from 9.20am – 10.00am. Staff have all their costumes prepared and are looking forward to seeing what the students’ book characters will be. Look out for photos from the day on our Facebook page. Parents/guests are most welcome. We will also have a cake sale from book week themed cakes made by our High School hospitality students. If Junior School students bring a $2 coin, they may buy some cake at the end of the parade. All proceeds will be going to charity. This is a great opportunity for students to be involved in our celebrations for Book week while having fun together.

Prizes will be awarded to the best costumes.

Year 5 camp

Year 5 have been on camp this week. We look forward to hearing the many stories that will come from three days at Tuross.

South Weston Athletics Carnival – Today we had many students represent St Edmund’s in various track and field events. As always, their behaviour was impeccable and they gave it their all.

Homework Club – Mrs Ellem will be running homework club from Weeks 2-9 this term on Tuesdays/Wednesdays. Please email her hellem@stedmunds.act.edu.au with a day’s notice should you wish to book your son/s in, along with the work you would like your son to work on.
