Exploring Religion and Popular Culture

In the modern world, the interplay between religion and popular culture has become a captivating realm of study, evident in the fabric of our society. As we navigate the complexities of daily life, the intriguing relationship between these two seemingly different domains comes to light. This exploration of the impact of religion on popular culture, and vice versa, takes centre stage in our Senior Religious Studies course, “Religion and Popular Culture”.

In this course, students delve into the ever-changing landscape of media, literature, and popular culture, examining different eras and how religion’s perception and influence have shaped individuals and communities. We investigate the world of social media and film as powerful influencers of how religion is portrayed and understood in contemporary society. The course critically examines stereotypes across multiple faith traditions and how popular culture shapes our perceptions of these religions.

Art and music serve as powerful channels of expression, often drawing inspiration from religious symbolism and ideas. However, these creative expressions may also veer into satire or cynicism, similar to many forms of entertainment on social media. Through this course, students explore the intentions of digital content creators and how religion can shape popular culture or be appropriated by it.

Classic films, such as ‘The Life of Brian,’ provide fascinating case studies. Students analyse its reception in its original context compared to modern times, identifying the factors that influenced this change and the elements of faith explored. Renowned artists like Kanye West and his utilization and misunderstanding of religiosity also come under scrutiny. Additionally, the course explores music across various eras and regions, showcasing the influence of religion on artistic expression.

The nature of this course continually evolves with the rise of social media, which has further intensified the connection between religion and popular culture. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter offer believers opportunities to share their religious experiences, connect with like-minded individuals, and promote interfaith dialogue. However, the digital realm is not without its challenges, often leading to misunderstandings and conflicts. Our students are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills to analyze the multiple facets, intentions, and impacts of media and popular culture.

Our Senior Religious Studies course fosters a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between religion and popular culture. By exploring these connections, students gain valuable insights into how belief systems and societal trends shape and interact with one another. This exploration equips them to navigate the ever-changing landscape of our globalized world with open minds and a profound appreciation for diversity and cultural understanding.
