The “vibe” will be reverberating around the hallways and classrooms of St Edmund’s College in 2018 with the introduction of Legal Studies into the Senior College program. However, we envisage that Senior students will develop even broader skills that strengthen their interest and passion for the subject.
Senior Eddie’s ‘Legal Eagles’ will be off to a flying start, with an invitation for the College to enter a team in the prestigious National High School Mooting Competition, described by Assistant Professor Louise Parsons as “an arena of gladiatorial combat where national and international competitions provide a battleground for law students to test their advocacy skills.”
Held at Bond University on the Gold Coast, the preliminary rounds will be held from Tuesday, 8th May to Friday, 18th May. This event challenges students to develop their advocacy skills in a competitive environment and is contested by over 80 of Australia’s most prominent schools.
In the classroom our new course will open up a diverse range of opportunities for students to develop an appreciation of the way the law relates to and serves both individuals and the community. The first unit will give students an insight into the complexity and limitations of the criminal justice system in achieving justice. Students will study a range of contemporary examples and practical experiences to investigate criminal law, processes and institutions, and the tension between community interests and individual rights and freedoms.
