Junior School News: Term 3, Week 10, 2023

Yesterday students in Junior School were involved in their third and final session with our pre-service teachers from the University of Canberra. This week they did a Health lesson and the feedback from students was that all these pre-service teachers should end up working at St Edmund’s. It is an excellent partnership between SEC and UC and most of the pre-service teachers are in the final or second last year of study. Thank you to Mr Richardson for organising and to our Junior School teaching team for being flexible and allowing these sessions to occur.

Last week we had 9 students attend the ACT Track & Field Carnival after they had qualified to represent the South Weston region. Congratulations to Tom Gibson (1st 100m, 1st 200m, 1st LJ, 2nd HJ), Oscar Wightman (2nd 100m), Hugh Gibson (2nd 100m, 2nd 200m, 2nd LJ), Benji McNamara (2nd 100m, 3rd 200m, 3rd Discus) and Clay Thompson (3rd 100m). These students are now eligible to represent the ACT at the National Championships in Tasmania in November. Congratulations to these talented athletes.

Yesterday we had some Year 6 visitors from Marist College to trial a fun session of activities and a barbeque with our Year 6 students. Students played in mixed teams across a variety of pursuits. Thank you to the Year 12 students who helped referee and to Year 6 teachers from both schools for supervising. We will go to Marist for the return leg on the first Wednesday of next term.

Year 4 Camp – October 19/20. Notes and information are available on the parent portal. A hard copy note has also been sent home.

Homework Club – Mrs Ellem will be running homework club from Weeks 2-8 next term on Tuesdays/Wednesdays. Please email her hellem@stedmunds.act.edu.au with a day’s notice should you wish to book your son/s in.

Team HEAT Holiday program – St Edmund’s College Junior School will be hosting a fun and exciting Team H.E.A.T holiday program in the upcoming school holidays. This will take place on Wednesday 4 October to Friday 6 October. All activities are facilitated by Team HEAT staff and Team HEAT is an external provider, although staff are known to the school. Siblings of current students (boys and girls) are welcome to attend.  Numbers are limited.
For more information, please contact team_heat@outlook.com

Canteen Reminder – Please note students are not allowed to purchase hot food over the counter at lunchtime. If a student wishes to have hot food for lunch, a lunch order must be completed through the parent portal.

Year 6 into Year 7 Enrolment – All current Year 6 families are reminded that there is no need to re-enrol your son into Year 7 at St Edmund’s College. The enrolment for Year 7 is automatic as your son is already enrolled at the College.

Hair Policy – Thank you to all parents/carers for keeping your son/s haircuts in line with the school’s uniform and hair policy. At times barbers may make mistakes. If they are informed of their mistake, many will fix the haircut (in line with our policy) at no extra charge. Could I please ask that all parents/carers familiarise themselves with the hair policy so that students can get about their daily work without teacher’s asking them about their haircuts. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Hair should be kept neat, tidy and clean at all times and not grown or styled into an extreme or exaggerated fashion.
Hair should be above the shoulder in length (above the bottom of the school shirt collar) and no shorter than a number ‘two’.
Students are not allowed to have lines or designs shaved into their hair nor grow long sections of hair that can be fashioned into ‘top buns’, plaits, dreadlocks, braids, ‘rats tails’, ‘mohawks’ or ‘mullets’ etc.
Hair should be evenly graded and/or blended, of natural colour, warn off the face and should not obstruct sight. Hair requiring to be tied back off the face may be necessary but only as a low bun.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up – Please do not use the staff carpark (off Canberra Avenue) to drop or collect students before and after school. This is a dangerous place for our students to be moving through and we would like to keep this area for staff only. Thank you for helping to keep our community safe.
