Mission Events Term 2

  1. Founder’s Day Mass

On Friday 3rd May we celebrated our annual Founder’s Day. This Mass was made special as it was our 70th anniversary. We had guests ranging from original old boys to Christian Brothers and recent graduates. The atmosphere was one that was a joyful reunion and celebration. Our Mass was beautifully celebrated by Fr Chris Eaton, our College Chaplain and concelebrated with Bishop Pat Power and Monsignor John Woods- who are both old boys of the College. It was humbling to celebrate the service and contribution of so many staff over 25 years and to recognise the significant contributions of Br Matt McKeon Spirit and Service awards.

A special thanks goes to Ms Bridget Cusack who assisted in coordinating the event and spent countless hours piecing together old uniforms form all facets of the school. Mrs Margaret Thomas who coordinated the music which so beautifully completed the celebration.

  1. Sacramental Program at SEC

Our sacramental program kicks off this week – Families who have expressed a keen interest in their sons making any sacrament are invited to attend an information evening Tuesday 7th at 6.30pm in the Edmund Rice Centre. At this event, you will learn about the program and be led in prayer and commitment by Fr Chris Eaton. Please come along if you are interested.

  1. Social Justice Focus Term 2

This term we will be raising money and calling for donated goods for Karinya House and HOME in Queanbeyan. Both of these organisations seek to support the most disadvantaged in our society. As local organisations, we are blessed to be able to have such a personal and long standing relationship with them. From Week 3, students will be invited to bring in personal hygiene items for men and women as well as children’s clothes and baby items. This will be done by class in Junior school and tutor group in the High school. A list of specific items will be communicated this week.
Our fundraisers will occur during school term and will also be advertised.

  1. Mother’s Day Mass 2024

  1. Lids 4 Kids

We will be collecting lids to be used for Lids4Kids. Students are encouraged to collect lids at home as well as at school. Lids4Kids Australia started by Tim Miller, a dad from Canberra, to deal with the problem of throwing away plastic bottle lids. Tim found out that tiny lids, smaller than a credit card, couldn’t be recycled and were just going to garbage dumps.

He teamed up with Envision, a group that turns plastic lids into things like wheelchairs for kids and prosthetic limbs.  Lids4Kids got famous after a news story on ABC News, and suddenly lots of people started donating lids.

Instead of just collecting 250,000 lids like they planned, they ended up gathering over five million. Envision started making more items out of recycled plastic, and Lids4Kids became an official environmental charity.

Now, Lids4Kids wants to keep collecting lids and work with companies that recycle to make more projects that help our planet.  This is something small yet powerful that St Edmund’s College can get behind!
